Jim Grant's Tech Tips
'01 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, ABS & Traction Lights On
Q:
I
have a 01 Pontiac Grand Prix GT and the ABS & Traction lights
came on. Once the brake pedal surged when pressed. I took my car to a
Pontiac dealer and the stored code was for the speed sensor. After this
was replaced both lights still came on after the car heated up. I took
it back to the dealership and there were no stored codes either in current
or history. The dealership cannot find any problems at this time. The
tech also said that the light has not come on for him and I told him that
the car must be driven until it heats up. The dealer still cannot find
the problem. Do you know what this might be? I have been on line all day
and can't find anything about this problem.

I will
not be able to tell you what is wrong with the ABS brake system or the
Traction control system with the information youve provided. Im
surprised that with the warning light coming on the way youre describing
that there isnt a diagnostic trouble code stored in the computers
memory. Without the diagnostic trouble code information it is next to
impossible to determine what service is needed to correct your problem.
I will suggest a strategy in finding a solution to your problem. Document
the amount of time the vehicle has to be driven to cause the warning light
to come on and do this more than once. The reason for this? You want to
be able to deliver/drive the vehicle to the dealer with the problem occurring.
You do not want to be paying a technician to go driving in your vehicle
until the warning light comes on, that can get pricey. If the vehicle
is under warranty it is a bit of a battle for the technician and the dealer
to be paid/reimbursed by the manufacturer for what could be viewed as
joy riding. For a solution to your problem either bring the vehicle in
broken or documented in a manner that reduces the time needed to create
the problem.
