Pontiac Grand Am, Coolant Level Warning Light
Q:
I drained the antifreeze on my '94 Pontiac Grand Am by taking the bottom
hose off the radiator on the passenger side. Then I put it back on and
took off the hose from the jug that connects to the radiator hose. I then
took the water hose and ran water through that little hose and it ran
water back into the Jug. To make a long story short the coolant light
won't turn off. What can I do to get this light to turn off? I would appreciate
your help.
Thank You, Granddad
A:
After all this time I thought we were the only ones that happens to! The
quickest fix is to remove the coolant reservoir and turn it upside down
and shake it. There is a little chamber with a little float that looks
like a disk or puck that floats up with the coolant level. Next to this
chamber is a sensor that reports the location of the float. The problem
is that sediment collects in the chamber and causes the float to stick
at the bottom of the chamber even when the coolant is at the correct level.
The result? A low coolant level warning light. A good rinse and shake
should free up the sticking float and turn your low coolant warning light
off.
