95 Pontiac
TransSport, Built in Water Maker
Q:# I own a ‘95 Pontiac TransSport 3.1 L V6. After my last vacation
(drove 4 hours) I noticed upon my arrival that the carpet by the driver
and driver’s side seats was soaked and a very nasty smell was coming from
it. When I returned from my vacation I took all the seats, carpet and
padding out. I was able to see water dripping through a seal of the A/C
system that is located between the engine compartment and the passenger
cage. I’ve been told that the drain is clogged. What does this mean? .
I ordered a brand new carpet ($540.00) but do not want to install it until
I am sure I’ve fixed the problem.

The A/C system
cools and removes moisture from the incoming air to the vehicle. On hot
and humid days the amount of moisture removed adds up. This water has
to be drained off or the problem you’re experiencing will occur. Realize
that we’re not talking about a tablespoon of water. During hot and humid
weather a 4 hour drive could produce water by the gallons. All vehicle
manufacturers provide a means to drain the water from the A/C system.
If the drain is restricted or plugged the water level will rise enough
to cause it to spill into the passenger compartment. It will cause damage
to the carpet and if not corrected, mold and fungi will grow, which is
bad stuff to breathe. Have your technician check and clear the drain to
the A/C system. The fix will be a lot less money than a new carpet.
