93 Mercury Villager, Where’s the Water Pump?
Q:
I own a ‘93 Mercury Villager van with a 3.0 engine. I can’t find anyone who knows where the water pump is located. The dealerships want me to come in and let them charge me to look at it; they won’t give me any answers. Please help me out here, I’ve worked on the Nissan engines before and don’t seem to see were the pump is.
A:
You’re right in saying Nissan when working on your Mercury Villager. The Nissan Quest and the Mercury Villager are nearly twins with different nameplates. The 3.0 engine in your Mercury Villager which is more of a Nissan, has a water pump that is located behind the timing belt cover, that is why it cannot be seen. To get a look at the water pump requires removal of the engine’s timing cover, which is not a quick and easy task. If you’re thinking you need a replacement water pump on your engine, plan on replacing the timing belt as part of the job, because the timing belt has to be removed to service the water pump. The engine in your vehicle is tightly packed in the engine compartment. Water pump and/or timing belt replacement is a time consuming job even for a skilled technician. So, if you’re planning on performing the work yourself I’d suggest researching what you’re getting yourself into. Be sure you have the necessary tools and information to do the job right the first time. You can cause a lot of damage to your checking account jumping into this repair unprepared.
